Standard Imaging Introduces the Exradin A30 Ionization Chamber: Thin Parallel Plate Design for UHDR and Conventional Dose Rate Measurements (Patent pending)

Posted: Feb 9th, 2026

Middleton, WI — Standard Imaging, a global leader in radiation measurement and quality assurance solutions, proudly announces the launch of the Exradin A30 Ionization Chamber, a groundbreaking parallel plate ionization chamber engineered to meet the extreme demands of ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) Flash radiation beams while still maintaining functionality at traditional clinical radiotherapy dose rates.

Flash radiation—especially high dose per pulse (DPP) electron beams—presents significant measurement challenges. Traditional ionization chambers suffer from extreme recombination effects that can severely compromise data accuracy at the very moment precision is most essential. The Exradin A30 provides a purpose-built solution.

“The Exradin A30 delivers what physicists have been waiting for—a durable and accurate ion chamber that enables existing calibration workflows to be used for Flash beams,” said Eric DeWerd, MBA, President and CEO.

At the heart of the Exradin A30 is its ultra-thin 0.3 mm air gap, enabling ions to be collected before recombination occurs. This design minimizes measurement error and provides reliable, consistent performance even in the most demanding beam conditions.

“Our goal with the A30 was to create a thin parallel plate chamber that produced sufficient signal at traditional dose rates to enable calibration using established NIST-traceable protocols, while minimizing saturation and dose-per-pulse dependencies in ultra-high dose rate beams,” commented Shannon Holmes, Ph.D., Medical Physicist. “The fact that we succeeded is truly a testament to the skills of our lead Engineer and to the wonderful research partners who collaborated with us on this project.”

Key Features of the Exradin A30 Ionization Chamber:

  • Ultra-thin 0.3 mm air gap reduces recombination in high DPP beams
  • Calibratable at conventional dose rates using standard Co-60 protocols
  • High-dose resilience with C552 conducting plastic construction
  • Alignment line for precise setup
  • Waterproof design for versatile phantom use

Manufactured from C552 conducting plastic, the A30 is built to endure hundreds of kGy, providing exceptional stability and long-term durability even in demanding high-dose environments. A high-visibility alignment line marks the inner surface of the entrance window, streamlining setup and ensuring consistent positioning. Also, with its fully waterproof design, the A30 integrates effortlessly into both water phantoms and solid slab phantoms for versatile, reliable use across applications.

The Exradin A30 Chamber is now available through Standard Imaging and its authorized distributors. Development of the Exradin A30 was supported in part by US NIH/NCI SBIR Contracts 75N91022C00039 and 75N91024C00097.
